This is the year of 2, so how about a small preview…

– Chapter 1 –
It Begins Again

As far as the eye could see, desolate plains of grey ash. Stale mist drooped across a silent, lifeless landscape. One can only recall, with great longing, the vivid colours of the living world. In a place absent of both of sunlight and darkness, forever shrouded in mournful cloud, time stands still. The permanent quietude is maddening to all those lost in Purgatory.

The mist parted like silk webs. A gathering of figures emerged from the whiteness in growing numbers; a troop, a squadron, an entire army, trudged across the dry land in an endless march.

Every man and woman held a various weapon, each in disrepair. Chipped swords, rusty axes, twisted knives and decrepit crossbows. Armaments that had been carried for so long that the weapons were now extensions of their owners.

A tall man led them. He stopped, raising a huge arm into the air.

“Hold,” he boomed.

The army behind him halted with a clatter.

An enormous, bulbous shape emerged from the mist. A huge, broad animal on four stout legs strode into sight. Lined with rough, grey scales, the whole front of its torso a huge circular mouth crammed with thousands of sharp teeth. The monster gurgled as it confidently strode toward the procession, swaying its frothy maw from side to side, seeking out prey.

“A Soul Destroyer,” the tall man grumbled. Suddenly the ranks shifted. A single soldier armed with a broken bow pushed his way through to the front of the crowd, wailing frantically.

“Release!” he cried, running past the started procession leaders. “Release at last! I can take no more!”

“What are you doing?” the tall man demanded.

“I implore you, great one! Feast on my soul! Release me from this unceasing torment!” the desperate man screamed, dropping and crawling on is knees.

The soul destroyer whipped about and loomed over the wailing soldier in an instant. Its mouth craned open, lips unfurling, its teeth protruding outwards like a mountain of spires. Grey, twisted arms erupted from the mouth, crashing down and all around the pleading man, latching onto him tightly.

The man seized up, lurching back and seething with noiseless agony. The arms wrapped over him, fingers drilling into his skin, diving between his muscles and coiling along his bones, the clawing arms of a thousand lost inside the Soul Destroyer. The snaps of his breaking body punctured the air. The man finally screamed in horrific pain, turning red as blood poured from his splitting skin. The monster reeled him inwards, the mouth closing in as the man exploded; a shrieking, flailing mess of bloody tendril hooks and torn flesh, dropping like meaty flakes into the waiting mouth.

A single bloody foot plopped to the ground. The monster leered at the rest of the army, lashing its mad array of twisted arms eagerly. The army readied their weapons. The monster descended upon them.

The soldiers fought back. They were snagged and dismembered. Molted grey body parts flew about, and sludgy, oozing blood scattered across the grey plain.

“All retreat!” the tall man cried. He cracked his head to one side. An acute sense stirred his attention. Something else approaching.

A blot of black smoke wandered forward, walking at a stern pace. It was a knight, adorned in coarse black armour, cloaked in a swirling black aura. A pair of narrow eyes peered up, burning with purple fire. The knight drew a slender, thorny spear from his lightless form and quickened the pace, rushing towards the Soul Destroyer.

The monster twitched, suddenly aware of the new presence. It retracted the reaching arms from its mouth and stomped about, focused on the new prey running straight for it. The Soul Destroyer unfurled its lips once more, the arms re-emerged, firing like a maelstrom towards the black knight. The knight chopped through, rushing through the forest of flailing hands where a single one could snare him. The knight’s aura erupted, burning through the tendrils like a searing black fire, charging spear first, head long into the mouth of the monster. The knight thrust forward, diving into the calamity of teeth and hooks.

The army and its leader watched in stunned awe, unable to see the fate of the knight through all the flailing and black fire rising into the air. The Soul Destroyer soon twitched with unease. Its body staggered, the front of the torso drooping like a sick animal. Its grey scales scorched into blackness. Large, black spikes burst from its body. The beast buckled and wailed, suddenly consumed by a black fire and burned from the inside, singed to ash.

When the smoke cleared, the knight; still cloaked in his aura. The knight turned his attention sharply to the crowd. The army raised their weapons to him, but the tall man drifted forward confidently.

“You… you are…” the tall man started, his knees buckling beneath him.

The knight gave a slow nod, glancing at the tall man with cruel, purple eyes.

“My lord!” the tall man shouted, giving way to a grovel. The rest of the army followed, all collapsing to their knees, bowing humbly to the black knight.

The knight stood silently. Trails of black energy still drifted from his aura, coursing behind him like vapour. One, long strain serpentined outwards like a tail, leading off beyond sight. A solid, black lifeline, connecting him to someplace unseen.

“There is a way back. I have returned for you all,” said the black knight.

“My lord, we are not worthy of your presence,” said the tall man. “I am legate Scelzar. I have failed you. I have failed all of Dolorin.”

“I know who you are,” said the knight, slowly kneeling on sharp greaves, meeting Scelzar face to face. The black knight reached out, placing a sharp, black gauntlet onto Scelzar’s shoulder.

“You have not failed me. You have all survived, that is all I could have asked of you.”

The legate kept his head low. His body started to fade, turning to ink, until his entire form evaporated into black smoke.

“You will return with me,” said the knight. “We will all return to the living world, as one. The time of the Dolorin’s vengeance has arrived. Another Bloodfest begins.”

The entire army faded away, one by one, vapourising and fusing into smoke, as if burning inside an intense fire. The trails of black flowed into the knight, fusing with him, until the knight stood alone, pulsating with black smoke. He turned and walked on, as the mist of Purgatory shrouded over him.

The lifeline attached to his back trailed off, to somewhere else entirely.

Character Bios: Will Dunbar

A wide eyed boy with endless energy, born and raised in the confines of a Hidden Government experiment.

00006 Will Dunbar

William Dunbar was born in the tumultuous city of Tristel – a city which does not technically exist.

As part of the grand social experiment, Tristel city is on Pacoven, the island chain owned and monitored entirely by the Hidden Government. Will was raised under controlled parameters, in a city designed to be divided by class and bombarded with modern pop culture.

Will spent his life keeping his head down. Never interested in school; prpetually excited and easily distracted, Will often stumbled around with the wrong crowd and committing petty criminal acts. His oldest and closest friend, Waine Aloife, encouraged him into trouble. While Waine had the confidence and the brains, Will provided the boundless energy, strength and dexterity to act as the brawn.

At one point, at the age of fifteen, Will was invited to join an athletic test far away from Tristel. Excited by the opportunity, his parents brazenly allowed him on the all expenses paid trip, though the details of the entire night away became hazy once he returned.

By his own nature, Will has always been a well meaning but easily misguided young man. After school hours and at weekends, he worked at his parent’s pottery art supply shop, proving his own artistic talent in his free time. He enjoys comic books and fantasy, although Waine usually chastises him for his nerdish interests. Will also practices different martial arts and excels at boxing, becoming the local Tristel Lightweight Boxing League bronze medallist, shortly before a night that will change his life forever…

Deep down, Will possesses the Magic Gene which makes him eligible to join the ranks of the Hidden Government Army. He displays a close affinity to Earth magic, able to channel the planet’s own cache of magical energy to enhance his strength. In time, Will comes to learn how to shape sentient Golems and control them in battle, and other hidden abilities throughout the Bloodfest series. For the first time in his aimless life, Will becomes excited at the chance to be the superhero he always wanted to be.

Uncovering the Cover • Bloodfest

The book cover for Bloodfest went through several stages to create.

  • Sketches of the main features; the body and skull. The hands were added separately later on.

  • Colouring and layering.

Two Skulls

  • The scythe and hands going over the torso were added later so that their size and position could be adjusted perfectly. In fact the scythe blade is a 3D render, allowing me to fine tune the angle to fit the space on the cover.

  • Different layers for colour, shading and effects.

Simple Reaper 2Simple Reaper 3Simple Reaper 4

  • Finally the atmosphere is adjusted; contrast, brightness and colour overlay, to create an appropriately dark and foreboding Reaper.

Bloodfest: Prologue Chapter

Bloodfest Cover Art

His name was Cerel Aacheneber, Arch Captain of Alpha Squad.

His title was the highest rank a field soldier could obtain. Arch Captain, leader of the best unit in the ground forces, commander to any and all supporting squadrons during live missions.

Cerel was a man of sheer perfection: handsome, intelligent, and built with a body as strong as steel. His hair gleamed like gold, his eyes flashed like stars. Everybody looked up to him. They all wanted to be like him.

Cerel knew the secrets of the universe. He was born with the rare skill of teleportation – to hold time still and phase through the world on a whim. He flowed with Auralithalain, the magical energy abundant in all things, and could cast the most complex of spells with the ease of an artist.

Deep below the ground, Cerel Aacheneber was about to die.

He raced through an underground maze. His team of experienced, exceptional soldiers were scattered. He heard screams from all sides, trapped in the dark. For the first time in years, Cerel felt afraid. His magical stamina was weakening, and he could not teleport out of danger.

The tight tunnel ahead was filled with darkness and low moans. It seemed to move of its own accord. Shambling, dusty corpses slid from their catacombs along the walls. The undead walked. They staggered and ambled languidly, but they swarmed in countless number, filling the narrow crypts like a rising flood.

The dead kept coming. The very walls bled with them.

Lieutenant Falbrich made contact. A usually stalwart and fearless man, his voice shrieked over the radio.

“Captain Aacheneber! There are too many! What do we do?”

“Keep fighting!” Cerel declared with waning gusto. There was a team of local militia above ground, desperately searching for a way to rescue Alpha Squad. Cerel and his team had toppled into the catacombs, carelessly falling into a simple trap, but their superiors would not leave Alpha Squad down here. They were invaluable. They were the best.

I am the best, Cerel told himself. There had to be some way out. Cerel knew he would get his team to safety, and he would complete his mission.

He almost tripped on a body, one wearing a black flak jacket. Cerel had stumbled over his former colleague Sergeant Hainer, now just a twitching, grey-skinned corpse on the floor. Hainer turned his head with a snap of bone and screamed an inhuman cry, his head had been gouged open. Cerel looked into the man’s clouded, dead eyes and stamped on his face to alleviate the suffering. Despite his power and skill, his years of experience, Cerel’s teammates were dying.

“Colonel Graycon!” Cerel cried over the radio. “Please report your position! Are you still alive?”

His medical officer had not responded for a long while now. Cerel could only pray for her safety.

“Someone, anyone… report your positions,” he demanded, and the radio responded with silence. Even Falbrich was gone.

A rotten husk lunged at Cerel from the shadows – something no longer human. Cerel watched and counted their number as they poured out of the walls and floor and advanced on him in sluggish succession. Cerel readied his weapon of choice – a railgun, laser-guided for impeccable accuracy and propelled by magnetic force. He fired, riddling the area with bullets, scattering the body parts reaching out to grab him. Teeth and limbs flew in every direction. Some were reduced to little more than dust. Powdery, desiccated corpses crumbled under the bullet spray like flimsy statues.

They seemed to feel no pain, but they were fragile and toppled quickly.

“Come on!” Cerel cheered triumphantly. “I’ve got you now!”

Limbs were severed, heads removed with grunted cries, but the things still loomed all around in great number. Their eyes pored over him, cutting through Cerel, his ammunition depleting.

The pile of grasping bodies fell away, but then a new figure emerged before Cerel. A creature of solid mist, like a shadow come to life, reaching out of the dark brick wall at the end of the tunnel. A large being appeared, ten feet tall and as broad as an ox, draped in dark robes. He glided towards Cerel, the fabric of his robes flowing on a silent wind. His face was concealed under a hood. Only gnarled, grey teeth and a pair of unblinking eyes gazed from beneath the dark shroud.

Cerel fired like a man possessed, yelling and plugging at the spectre with magnetic rounds, but the bullets phased through the smoke-like being. The rail gun overheated, inciting a surge of energy to back up and explode over Cerel’s right arm. His skin seared, and the captain released his weapon with a cry of pain.

He had not felt that in years. The sensation was shocking. His arm was deeply torn and weeping with blood.

The tall figure hovered, watching Cerel, waiting for him to stir. Cerel moved quickly, not giving up, and struck the monster with his advanced spells – those of such power that only a select few could use them. Flurries of lightning and vibrant, scorching flame filled the corridor, threatening to destroy the entire space and Cerel himself in his desperation.

But his opponent was quicker, dodging between the arcs of magic with ease. He was resilient too; the spells that did make contact flittered away like snowflakes drifting into a bonfire.

Cerel finally subsided, exhausted and bleeding. He pulled out his handgun and aimed at the hovering monster, knowing it was futile.

“Who… or what are you?” Cerel demanded, staggering and holding his wounded arm to his chest.

“I am the Reaper,” the figure answered. Its voice was like a crumbling mountain, like stone slabs grinding together.

The being reached over his shoulder, and unsheathed a weapon of twisted bone and iron. A scythe.

Cerel fell to his knees. His mind reeled, trying to escape the predicament. Before him stood Death.

   “You… are truly…?”

Cerel tried to speak, but his voice was going. Inevitability dawned on him.

He found himself thinking about his parents, both of whom had passed away a long time ago. He thought of Shelley, his one and only. The queen of the prom, the high school sweetheart, never again seen after Cerel took on his military career.

He was the Arch Captain, the highest rank a field soldier could obtain. He was the best in the army. Everybody looked up to him. They all wanted to be him.

Cerel knew it was time to give up.

“Life is fleeting,” the Reaper boomed. “All living things come to an end, and I am that end.”

Cerel Aacheneber was only a man, one of billions. He felt the clasping, decayed hands behind him, dragging him into a surge of gnashing teeth and nails. They sunk into his limbs, at the soft joints between his armour. Dozens of figures surrounded him. They ravenously pulled at his flak jacket; finding his skin and tearing through, parting his muscles and ripping out his organs. Several grabbed his wounded arm, and tugged until they snapped it free like a choice cut of meat.

Cerel only lay still and watched. The undead overwhelmed him, picking him clean. He saw them unravel his intestines. A jaw crunched his neck. Hot blood gushed out, and Cerel’s incredible life was finally over. His twitching hand pulled the trigger of his handgun one last time, pulverising a zombie’s head several feet away.
